Teaming up will help teachers and students to build strong relationships during studying English
Nowadays this situation happens very often when it’s necessary to teach students with different native languages, this way it will better to make a team of teachers use all their efforts in the right direction. There are certain things that English language teachers (ELTs) can do to cultivate these dynamic relationships, and also things they should avoid doing.
We had been worked together with lots of language specialists for eight years and can say that our experience still not perfect enough. The main conclusion which we made after all these cooperation works was not to be too pushy and judgmental while co-planning.
The difference in studying plans
The process of studying any languages includes the explaining of words scope of use. For example, the concept of a factor in social studies differs from its analogue in math. When co-planning with a math teacher, an ELT can suggest using different colour manipulates to help show the concept of factoring.
Content teachers are not also the teachers of English as the second language. Their main goal is being experts in their discipline to communicate their content knowledge or process English texts using this language. You should help teachers to improve their teaching styles to make them the most effective than ever before.
Never try to judge anyone after his/her lesson on the co-planning session. As it will destroy the mutual understanding and will prevent the achieving of common goals. To achieve the success in teaching you should accomplish three tasks: what students need to learn, what strategy a teacher should choose to teach better and how students should show that they understand the materials.
It’s not meaning that ELLs will do less than other students or teachers give not so deep and useful information. You should pay more attention to ELLs’ studying program and make it as hard as necessary. The level of success should be high and you should help students to reach it.
Add suggestions and get feedback are the keys to success
Success in co-planning is about adding onto someone’s ideas, not subtracting from them. You should avoid using judgmental phrases as they only divide you and content teacher. Improve your teaching relationships using cooperation and making a profile of every participant’s good features.
The collaboration session should be ended with praising the content teachers for their ideas during the planning. It’s important for content teachers to know that their efforts are recognized by the language specialists.
Nowadays only cooperation between content teachers and language specialists is capable to create effective instruction and design meaningful learning experiences. If everybody works alone, there are students who will suffer.
